2000 Field Trip (2nd-9th September 2000):
Blueschist metamorphism on Syros, Cyclades, Greece

Leader: John Schumacher

INTRODUCTION

This excursion was an opportunity to visit one of the best localities of high-pressure and low-temperature metamorphic rocks in Greece. Spectacular examples of blueschist-facies and transitional eclogite-facies mineralogy are found throughout the island, which is the type locality of glaucophane (Hausmann, 1845). Metamorphic rocks on Syros have been studied recently by groups based in France, Germany, the UK and the USA, and results of some of these investigations will be presented on the trip.

This excursion was the antithesis of most trips of this type, we spent most of our days on foot rather than in conveyances. As a consequence, we saw mostly "low velocity" rather than "high-speed" outcrops.
