The theme of the trip is to look at the geology of a subduction zone from the "top down." We will initially look at the spectacular exposures of subduction related volcanics on Santorini and then move to Syros, type locality of glaucophane (photos from the West of England group of the Geologist's Association), where we will look at excellent examples of blueschist-facies metavolcanics, marbles that are juxtaposed with a melange of metavolcanics, serpentinites and metagabbros, which preserve igneous textures in many places. |

| Fees & Deadlines
The field trip fee will cover the evening meal and breakfast, lodging and transport after you arrive on Santorini (16.09.06) until the day you leave Syros (23.09.06). Participants are responsible for making their own travel plans to Santorini and from Syros. Participants are responsible for their getting their own lunches at local shops and paying for their own beverages.

| Postgrad Student Support
The Metamorphic Studies Group will award up to two postgrad (PhD) students the field trip fee of £310, and the Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group will support postgrad (PhD) students through its regular support programme. To apply for VMSG support, go to the Funding link at the VMSG home page. The next deadline is 15 June. If you are applying for VMSG sponsorship, please also send a notification of intent to participate as soon as possible to John Schumacher. To compete for MSG awards, postgrad applicants should write a short essay of no more than 250 words explaining your interest in participation and how you and/or your thesis project would benefit. Please include the following information as well: your University, Department and a statement from your academic advisor confirming your status as a PhD level student (this can be an email). Please send us notification of intent to apply as soon as possible (so we can hold places for students) and submit the application (preferably as an attachment) to John Schumacher by June 1, 2006. |

| Travel Information
Busses run from the Athens Airport to the main ferry port of Piraeus (alternative spelling is Peiraias) 24 hours a day (cost = €3.20, duration = about 45 minutes in the early morning): E96 Piraeus - Athens Airport Express (schedule for the Airport to Piraeus route is available as a PDF) or see the Athens Airport website for more information. At Piraeus you can find several ticket agents and a 24 hour restaurant. Ticket agents are always open prior to departures. There are also busses that run between the airport and the smaller Port of Rafina, where there are also some ferries to and from the Cyclades Islands. Check ferry schedules (this is not a Mac friendly website) in the Summer for more up-to-date information. |
